Marriage, Divorce & Remarriage

Mt. 19:3, “The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? (The answer follows)

Cp. w. v. 6, “…What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (Although man can unlawfully sunder a marriage, it is a violation of God’s will)

The Lord’s Rule & Only Exception, v. 9, “…Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.” (The put away one in part B represents either case scenario presented in part A)

The Consequences of Unlawful Divorcement, v. 12, “For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.”

Unfortunately, some are unable to “receive” it!

There Are Only Two Classes of People
Who May Lawfully Remarry "Another"

1) Those who have lawfully put away their mate:

Mt. 19:9, “And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”

2) Those whose bound mate has died:

Rom. 7:3, “So then if, while her husband LIVETH, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be DEAD, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.”

The put away person falls into neither of these categories:

  • The woman’s “husband” has not died.

  • The woman did not divorce her husband for fornication        (instead, he divorced her).

Mt. 5:32, “…whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”

The Bible Translator, Oct. 1956, pgs. 151‑152, “against” has the meaning here of “with.” (cf. Nestle’s Text and The Expositor’s Greek Testament, Vol. one, pg. 409.)

The Interlinear Greek-English New Testament by Alfred Marshall (pg. 182) also translates Mark 10:11, with her” as pertaining to the subsequent spouse, jhb.]

THE PERSON WHO "IS PUT AWAY"
COMMITS "ADULTERY"
WHEN THEY REMARRY ANOTHER!

Three Times Jesus Said:

“…and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.”  Mt. 5:32

“…and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.”  Mt. 19:9

“…and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.” Lk. 16:18

The Opposition Contends: Not in all Cases!

Who Will We Believe?

God vs. Man

God’s Order For Salvation
(Mk. 16:16)

1.) Believe  2.) Baptized  3.) Saved

Man’s Disorder
1.) Believe   2.) Saved   3.) Baptized
1.) Baptized   2.) Saved   3.) Believe

God vs. Man

God’s Order For A Scriptural Remarriage
(Mt. 19:9)

 Man’s Disorder

4.) Second Divorce  5.) Remarriage

“…let God be true, but every man a liar.” Rom. 3:4

Who Will We Believe?

God vs. Man

I Pet. 3:21
“baptism doth also now save us”

Man’s Word
“baptism doth NOT also now save us”

Compare:

God vs. Man

Mt. 19:9
“and whoso marrieth her which is put away

doth
commit adultery.”

Man’s Word
“and whose marrieth her which is put away

doth
NOT commit adultery.”

“…let God be true, but every man a liar.” Rom. 3:4

Who Will We Believe?

Please Consider God’s Order
AFTER
An UNlawful Divorce:

God’s Order vs. Man’s Disorder

God’s Order For The Put Away
AFTER An UNlawful Divorce

(Mt. 5:32; 19:9; Lk. 16:18; I Cor. 7:11)

1.) Marriage  2.) UNlawful Divorce
 3.)
No Remarriage Allowed to “Another”

Man’s Disorder
1.) Marriage  2.) UNlawful Divorce  3.) Fornication
 4.)“Biblical” Divorce  5.) Remarriage

“…let God be true, but every man a liar.” Rom. 3:4

Their “Biblical Putting Away” doctrine is much like “Grape Nuts.” It contains neither “grapes” nor “nuts”!  Likewise, their “application” is not “Biblical,” nor is it “Putting Away!”  You CANNOT DO what has already been DONE!
